Merlot Crushing – Niagara Region

We are celebrating the Harvest Season throughout the month of November! As temperatures keep dropping and we're getting closer and closer to Winter (sigh...), we're looking back upon this Fall's bountiful harvest.

Earlier in October we headed over to our neighbouring Niagara Region to crush our very first batch of Merlot grapes!

Together with our friends at the Corkscrew Society - Waterloo Region's finest wine crew (since 1978!) - we put shoulder to shoulder and got these grape juices flowing. No foot stomping was involved in this process.

Crushing is the first step in wine making, allowing grape skins to open and mix with seeds, juice and stems, which add extra tannin and structure to wines.
